An illness of variable severity commonly manifested by diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and sometimes vomiting. Asymptomatic infections may occur, and the organism may cause extra-intestinal infections.
Confirmatory: Isolation of Salmonella from any clinical specimen (lab report may indicate “isolated”, “growth”, “identified”, or “culture”). Specimen may be from blood, urine, stool, wound, etc.
Supportive: Detection of Salmonella spp. in a clinical specimen using a CIDT. A CIDT is any diagnostic test that does not involve growing the bacteria (i.e., culture, isolate) in any type of diagnostic media (ex., broth, agar, slant). Keywords indicating a CIDT was performed: “PCR,” “detected” or “positive.” Antibody tests do not qualify as supportive laboratory evidence.
Linked by place and time to a case with laboratory evidence of Salmonella.
Confirmed
A case that meets the confirmatory laboratory criteria.
Probable
A case should not be counted as a new case if laboratory results were reported within 365 days of a previously reported infection in the same individual.
When two or more different serotypes are identified from one or more specimens from the same individual, each should be reported as a separate case.
For this disease/condition, Confirmed and Probable case statuses are included in the released case count.
N = This criterion is Necessary in conjunction with all other “N” and any “O” criteria in the same column is required to classify a case.
O = At least one of these “O” criteria in each category in the same column (e.g., clinical presentation and laboratory findings)—in conjunction with all other “N” criteria in the same column—is required to classify a case.
